Filtering 37% of irrelevant applications with voice bots
KFC used Kit voice automation to verify candidate interest, filter irrelevant applications, and pass qualified applicants to agents, increasing hiring conversion while reducing manual screening work.
The primary challenge during recruitment was the sheer volume of irrelevant applications consuming agent time. While agents processed low-quality applications, we missed opportunities to reach and interview interested candidates. We identified automated calling as the most efficient way to validate resumes without expanding our team. The new technology increased conversion significantly. We now hire 15-20% of applicants. We also reduced call center headcount by 1.5x and eliminated most human error from the screening process. Most importantly, we lowered overall recruitment costs, which has been critical since our franchise partners also use this system for hiring.
KFC
KFC is a global fast-food chain present in 130 countries. The company employs 300,000+ people worldwide.
High-volume hiring created too much manual screening work
KFC hires at massive scale, with more than 15,000 resumes arriving every month and 22,000 people employed annually. But hiring conversion was below target because recruiters and call center agents had to spend too much time reviewing applications that were incomplete, incorrect, inactive, or irrelevant.
The team needed to identify genuinely interested candidates faster, reduce manual screening work, and make sure agents spent their time scheduling interviews instead of chasing low-quality applications.
- Too many irrelevant applications consumed agent time
- A large share of incoming applications did not move the hiring process forward. Some candidates entered incorrect information, while others lost interest within hours. Agents still had to spend time processing these applications before they could reach the candidates who were ready to interview.
- Qualified candidates could be missed before positions filled
- The call center did not always have enough time to review resumes and contact candidates before roles were filled. In fast-moving recruitment, slow validation can mean that interested candidates are contacted too late or not reached at all.
- Questionnaire errors made candidates harder to reach
- Incorrectly completed forms created friction before the first conversation. When contact details or application data were wrong, agents lost time trying to reach people who could not be contacted or did not match the role requirements.
- Manual screening increased cost and human error
- The process depended heavily on human review. That made screening slower, more expensive, and harder to standardize across KFC and its franchise partners. The HR team needed a repeatable validation workflow that could scale without expanding the call center.
Voice bot for initial candidate screening
KFC integrated a Kit-based voice assistant with its HR and CRM systems. The goal was to automate the first screening layer, verify candidate interest quickly, and give agents only applications that had already passed basic validation.
The workflow starts after a candidate completes a questionnaire. The bot then contacts the candidate, checks interest, explains the role when relevant, and prepares the agent for the live scheduling conversation.
- Automated dialing after questionnaire completionr
After a candidate submits a questionnaire, the voice bot starts the validation process. It makes up to 6 dialing attempts over 2 days, helping KFC reach candidates while their interest is still active.
- Triggered candidate calls after questionnaire submission
- Made up to 6 dialing attempts over 2 days
- Reduced manual follow-up work for agents
- Helped identify inactive applications faster
- Candidate interest verification by voice bot
When the call connects, the bot asks whether the candidate wants to hear more about the role. This simple verification step filters out candidates who are no longer interested before a human agent spends time on the application.
- Checked candidate interest before agent involvement
- Filtered out low-intent applications early
- Reduced time spent on irrelevant resumes
- Helped agents focus on candidates ready to move forward
- Role explanation and agent handoff
If the candidate confirms interest, the bot describes the position and analyzes questionnaire data for relevance. When the application qualifies, the bot places the call on hold and transfers the candidate to a call center agent.
Before the conversation starts, the agent receives candidate information in text format, making it easier to schedule the right interview date, time, and location.
- Described the role automatically when candidates showed interest
- Checked questionnaire data for relevance
- Transferred qualified candidates to live agents
- Sent candidate context to agents before the conversation
- Inactive application marking and real-time reporting
If the bot cannot reach a candidate, the application is marked as inactive. Real-time reporting gives administrators visibility into candidate screening outcomes, interview scheduling, unanswered calls, and attendance confirmation.
- Marked unreachable applications as inactive
- Tracked how many candidates were screened by the bot
- Showed how many interviews were scheduled
- Helped administrators monitor attendance confirmation and campaign results
Faster screening, higher hiring conversion, lower recruitment cost
After implementation, KFC reduced manual screening work and gave agents a cleaner pipeline of bot-verified candidates. The team could process candidates faster, reduce irrelevant applications, and improve hiring conversion without expanding the recruitment call center.
Candidate verification compared with human screening
The automated voice workflow made initial screening 10 times faster than manual review. Agents no longer had to process every application from the start and could focus on candidates who were already verified by the bot.
Irrelevant applications eliminated from the workflow
The system eliminated 37% of applications as irrelevant. This reduced the volume of low-quality applications reaching the call center and helped agents spend more time on candidates who were interested and reachable.
Increase in conversion to hire
Hiring conversion increased by 11%. KFC now hires 15-20% of total applicants, supported by faster screening, better candidate validation, and fewer manual errors in the early recruitment process.
